Winter Solstice 2012 (belated)

It may be a week late, but our daughters' primary school celebrated the Winter Solstice tonight due to being postponed after some nasty weather last week. I do love a good bonfire and any excuse to go to one - I'm there!

The woodfired oven was hot and pumping out pizzas, there was storytelling, hot soups with bread and a good turnout of people for a blustery winters night.

Let the lighting of the bonfire commence - a ceremonial task reserved for the grade six students.
The 'sun' was made in a junior landcare session at school .
Watch it burn, baby..
...and burn it did!

I do hope your solstice was a good one..I'm so looking forward to the longer days again!

  3. Sorry. The iPad jams all the time. Do Landcare often have junior sections? What do they do with the kids?

  4. bonfires were popular when i was young and i loved them too but unfortunately they just don't seem to be an acceptable part of urban living any more..it's a pity because fire creates a wonderful aura of joy and warmth that's particularly inviting in winter..

  9. I missed the lighting of the fire! Looks so beautiful. I'm pleased you captured it. That sun looks amazing. I was so happy with how the evening went. Totally knackered today though. Bring back the sun and longer days!

  10. Wow! I too, am impressed with a school that celebrates these things in this way! We are planning a mid winter feast this year (ok so it will be a post mid winter mid winter feast now) but the principle remains! We used to do Halloween but decided that it was more of an american thing - the way we were doing it anyway, and dcided to replace it with something more fitting with our lives and backgrounds! Love the photos! - Kara

  11. That looks like a great time! Our kids school would be too tied up in safety issues to ever allow a bonfire. Too bad!
